I spent 3 hours on the phone yesterday with Dell representatives, all of which had no idea what I was asking for. They kept telling me I had to buy a CD drive to install Windows, which many of us know not to be true. I have the CD but the computer has no disc drive and was recently formatted due to a virus. Can I just use a normal ISO of Windows? I've heard that if it's an OEM edition I cannot, but the product key is on the side of the computer which I imagine would allow me to activate it. I need a 64 bit Windows 7 Professional ISO file.
At the Dell logo, tap the F12 key to bring up the Boot Menu. Select your DVDROM drive and press. This should start the recovery disc. Watch for a message that states something to the effect 'Press any key to boot from DVDROM drive' and press. Follow any on screen instructions to complete the recovery. The comment by comrademike says it's supposed to be possible to download Windows 7 free from microsoft.com (but you still need a product key; the Windows 7 product key is written on a sticker on the underside of Dell laptops). The problem is I am running (and only have a key for) Windows 7 enterprise (Version 6.1 Build 7600) 32 bit, and the only downloadable iso file I can find for the enterprise version is the 90 day trial. I don't want the trial though, I want the entire version. Pradeep Bedse wrote:Yes joshuaking! You are correct you can download the Windows 7 Professional ISO file from Microsoft. I CAN grab a DVD drive, but it would be out of my computer which is something I'd prefer to avoid, but will do if necessary. You don't need to talk to Dell directly.Whether or not the OS is OEM licensed, it should still work on compatible hardware, even if it's a bootable USB drive. In fact, that's what they tried to sell me when until I finally talked them into sending me a replacement CD once. But I didn't have the recovery discs to begin with so I had no choice but to talk to dell. You do have the recovery disc which means all you need to do now is create the ISO and use RUFUS as Gary Williams suggested. Yes, you will need to use a different computer to create the ISO and to create the bootable USB drive, but once you do you'll be golden. Also, to answer the original question, yes, you can use a retail copy of Windows but it's already OEM licensed, presumably, so idk why you would do that, you seem to have everything you need except (maybe) the spare computer that will allow you to create the ISO and bootable USB drive. Grab a 4GB flash drive, download RUFUS, and follow the directions in above. You have absolutely everything you need. Also: If the unit is under warranty, my experience with Dell has always been they'll send you a copy of their branded OEM Windows DVD. This is identical to the media you get from a Microsoft-branded OEM DVD, with one very, very minor difference. Dell has added their branding to certain areas of Windows (typically Internet Explorer, the System control panel, and the Windows boot screen). If the unit is not under warranty, my experience with Dell has been they won't even sell you a disc. You'll need to pop out to Amazon, NewEgg, TigerDirect, or whatever eTailer you choose and buy an OEM license. The OEM COA will happily activate on that media. An OEM license (like the one on the COA attached to the machine) will NOT activate Windows installed from retail or volume media. OEM to OEM, Retail to Retail, Volume to Volume. It's always been like this. NEVER download an ISO from an untrusted source. If it's not within the Microsoft domain, its not trusted.I had a copy of XP (years back obviously) needing an.iso, in a desperate moment I turned to torrents. The copy I once legally owned, shared with a 'friend' had appeared for download. It wasn't a good copy. It was a very bad copy. Things can be edited, things can be hidden. Also, save your CD's. My Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop is loaded down with viruses and all sorts of other bad stuff. I really need to re-install Windows but I don’t have a Windows 7 CD.I know I can order a Windows CD from Dell but I’d rather not if I can avoid it. My daughter said she thinks I can re-install Windows without the CD. Is that true? If it is how do I do that?Rick’s answer: Yes Angie, you should be able to restore your laptop’s Windows installation back to it’s factory condition with just a few mouse clicks and keystrokes. Just follow these steps:1 – Back up any data and/or user files that you don’t want to lose onto blank CDs, DVDs, a USB flash drive or an external hard drive. This step is extremely important because the Factory Restore process will wipe the hard drive clean during the format and restore process.2 – With your laptop powered off, press the power button and then start pressing the F8 key about once per second. Keep pressing F8 until a text menu appears on the screen.3 – Select Repair Your Computer.4 – Select a keyboard layout, then click Next.5 – If prompted to do so, log on as a local user.6 – Select Dell Factory Image Restore, then click Next.7 – Check the box to confirm that you really want to proceed with the Factory Restore procedure. Understand that doing so will result in the hard drive being formatted and Windows 7 will be re-installed from scratch.
